WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) Apr 23 – Advisors to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday backed a plan that might allow for the return to market of GlaxoSmithKline's controversial irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) therapy Lotronex (alosetron), at least for patients with a debilitating form of the disease.
IBS is characterized by chronic and reoccurring abdominal pain, bloating and abnormal bowel functions. It is not considered life-threatening, but experts say it costs billions a year in lost productivity as well as hospitalizations and other medical interventions.
