NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Apr 23 Bowel ultrasound (US) is accurate in identifying complications, location, and extent of Crohn's disease (CD), according to results of a prospective trial published in the April issue of Gut.
"Despite the fact that bowel ultrasound has recently been proved to be useful in the assessment of bowel diseases, uncertainty persists as to its diagnostic role in patients with complicated CD," write F. Parente and colleagues from L. Sacco University Hospital, Milan, Italy.
Parente's group enrolled 296 consecutive inpatients with proven CD who had complete radiographic evaluation, including small bowel x-ray, colonoscopy, or double contrast barium enema. Each patient had bowel US performed by 2 experienced operators blinded to the results of other diagnostic procedures.
