NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 20 – Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is functionally active in Barrett's esophagus epithelium and inhibition of the enzyme hinders cellular proliferation, according to a report published in the March 20th issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
These findings suggest that COX-2 inhibitors could be useful in preventing the transition from Barrett's esophagus, a premalignant condition, to overt esophageal carcinoma.
Dr. Kenneth K. Wang and colleagues, from the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, analyzed esophageal tissue specimens from 20 patients with Barrett's esophagus to assess COX-2 expression and activity.
