Intravenous magnesium sulfate is superior to oral nimodipine for seizure prophylaxis in women with severe preeclampsia, the results of a controlled comparative trial indicate. The findings also oppose current thinking that cerebral vasospasm and ischemia are the main causes of eclampsia.
Dr. Michael A. Belfort of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center in Salt Lake City and colleagues describe their study in the January 23rd issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
