The selective cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) inhibitor, celecoxib, does not seem to affect patients with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD), according to a report by US researchers.
The finding adds further support to the hypothesis that COX- inhibition 1 is necessary for inducing respiratory symptoms, study author Dr. Katharine M. Woessner and colleagues, from Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, note.
As reported in the August issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism, the researchers assessed the respiratory outcomes of 60 patients with a history of AERD who were challenged with celecoxib, aspirin, and placebo in a blinded fashion.
