עוד סיבה להפסקת עישון: חשוד גם בגרימת מחלת קרוהן

Smokers tend to develop Crohn’s disease while non-smokers tend to develop ulcerative colitis among siblings with similar genetic susceptibility for inflammatory bowel disease. Investigators from St Thomas’s School of Medicine and Dentistry and St Mark’s Hospital in London, England, and the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University Hospital Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland, studied smoking habits and inflammatory bowel disease characteristics in 658 patients from 242 inflammatory bowel disease pedigrees.

 Smoking at the time of diagnosis was found to be associated with the development of Crohn’s disease with an odds ratio of 3.55 in all familial patients. Smokers were protected from ulcerative colitis with an odds ratio of 0.28. Eighty-nine sibling pairs were discordant for smoking at the time of diagnosis.

 Of these pairs 23 were also discordant for type of inflammatory bowel disease. In 21 of the 23 patients, Crohn’s disease was present in the smoker and ulcerative colitis in the

nonsmoker.
