Sildenafil is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men taking at least two antihypertensive medications, researchers announced at the 17th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension (ASH). The results were presented here Friday by Dr. Giuseppe Mancia, of the University of Milan, Italy. His group assessed the efficacy of sildenafil in 568 men with ED taking two or more antihypertensives, who were randomized to receive sildenafil or placebo for a six-week, double-blind phase followed by a six-week, open-label extension. Patients who completed the double-blind phase were eligible for open-label treatment. All patients started the open-label phase with sildenafil 50 mg/day. “Erectile dysfunction is common in men who have hypertension and in those taking antihypertensive medications,” Dr. Mancia explained. “Until recently, clinical trials of sildenafil provided limited information on the efficacy and safety of sildenafil in patients who were taking two or more antihypertensives as few of these patients on complex, multidrug treatments were enrolled in earlier studies.” In the present study, the primary efficacy variables included patient responses to the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questions 3 and 4, regarding the ability to achieve (Q3) and maintain (Q4) an erection. Secondary outcomes included the IIEF erectile function (EF) domain; two global efficacy assessment questions; intercourse success rate; and the Erectile Dysfunction Inventory of Treatment Satisfaction (EDITS).
