Transcervical Superior Mediastinal Lymphadenectomy Reduces Post-Surgical Morbidity

Transcervical superior mediastinal lymphadenectomy safely and effectively treats superior mediastinal metastases in papillary thyroid carcinoma while avoiding the morbidity of the traditional sternal split.

This finding was reported by specialists at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, noting that surgery was the treatment of choice for lymph node metastases in papillary thyroid carcinoma. When these were adequately extirpated, lymph node involvement did not seem to reduce cure rates or survival. But, while surgical lymphadenectomy for metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma had been well described, superior mediastinal lymphadenectomy had only occasionally been mentioned.
