Inhaled Hormone Therapy Investigated As Treatment Option In Breast Cancer

An inhaled hormone treatment, currently under development for the treatment of endometriosis, may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women at high risk of the disease, according to the results of a preliminary study conducted in 13 women.

The product called Libra combines a drug called deslorelin, a gonadotrophin-releasing agonist with small amounts of estrogen and testosterone. Deslorelin acts to shut down the ovaries while the testosterone and oestrogen then replace the quantities that would normally be produced by the ovaries to prevent the onset of premature menopause.
