Aventis has announced that it has received marketing authorisation from the European Commission for flexible administration of basal insulin, Lantus at any time of day.
The Commission granted that a flexible, any time of day administration of Lantus be added to the prescribing information. The long lasting basal insulin should be administered once daily at any time but at the same time each day.
Also, the Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products – the scientific body of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency – has issued a positive opinion that will allow for treatment with Lantus in children of 6 years or above with diabetes mellitus. In children, efficacy and safety of Lantus have only been demonstrated when given in the evening.
