For HIV-positive men with hypertriglyceridemia (usually associated with protease inhibitor therapy), the fibrate gemfibrozil is safe and moderately effective in reducing triglyceride levels, according to the results of a randomized trial.
Dr. John Miller from St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Australia, and colleagues randomly assigned 37 HIV-positive men with hypertriglyceridemia who were receiving protease inhibitors (PIs) to 16 weeks of gemfibrozil 600 mg twice daily or to placebo. Before being randomized, the men underwent a 4-week dietary intervention period.
