Exercise capacity is a strong predictor of future mortality in healthy women irrespective of age and other cardiovascular risk factors, according to data presented here November 17 at the American Heart Association’s 2002 Scientific Sessions.
Dr. Samia Mora with Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, presented data from the Lipid Research Clinics Prevalence Study conducted from 1972 thought 1976.
The study enrolled 2,994 asymptomatic women 30 to 80 years of age with no known cardiovascular disease, who underwent baseline Bruce exercise treadmill tests in and were followed until 1995.
“Beyond the identification of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, exercise treadmill testing has been proposed as a tool for identifying higher risk asymptomatic individuals,” Dr. Mora said. “While exercise capacity is known to predict mortality in asymptomatic men, it is unclear whether it has similar prognostic value in women.”
