Aerobic Exercise Improves Insulin Sensitivity Without Affecting Plasma Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha

Aerobic exercise appears to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood pressure without a reduction in plasma tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels among older hypertensive females. Fourteen hypertensive females, mean age 62 years, participated in a six-month aerobic exercise program.

They exhibited a significant increase in maximal aerobic capacity (VO(2)max) (p =.0001), and a significant decline in systolic (p =.01) and diastolic (p =.006) blood pressure. There was also a significant decline in total body fat mass (p =.005), abdominal fat mass (p =.048), and percent body fat (p =.006). Frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance testing showed significantly increased insulin sensitivity following the exercise program (p =.007).
