Lipid peroxidation products and superoxide dismutase activity are elevated in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Catalase activity, however, is significantly reduced in patients with diabetes, report investigators.
The investigators, from the Department of Internal Medicine at Gaziantep University in Gaziantep and the Departments of Internal Medicine and Biochemistry at Inonu University in Malayta, Turkey, studied 64 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 36 healthy control subjects.
Levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, considered an index of endogenous lipid peroxidation, were measured, as were activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. Results showed that thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were elevated in diabetic patients versus controls.
