Intramuscular Long-Chain Fatty Acyl-CoAs Reduction May Explain Enhanced Insulin Action Following Weight Loss

Reductions in the levels of intramuscular long-chain fatty acyl-CoAs may be responsible, at least in part, for enhanced insulin action that usually accompanies weight loss in obese patients.

Increases in intramyocellular long-chain fatty acyl-CoAs (LCACoA) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in skeletal muscle.

To test that hypothesis, Joseph A. Houmard, PhD, and colleagues at East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina, United States, measured the LCACoA content of muscle samples and insulin action in 11 morbidly obese patients before and after gastric bypass surgery.

The surgery yielded significant weight loss for the patients. Their mean weight declined from 142.3 ± 6.8 kg before surgery to 79.6 ± 4.1 kg after the procedure, the researchers reported.
