Researchers report that an extended-release formulation of the oral anti-hyperglycaemic agent metformin is equivalent to the immediate-release formulation in maintenance and control of plasma glucose levels over a 24-hour period.
Investigators from Andrx Laboratories, in Hackensack, New Jersey, presented these findings here September 24th at the annual meeting of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (ACCP).
“There is no detectable difference apparent in this study between the pharmacokinetics of the two agents and the plasma control efficacy,” said lead researcher Michael Lamson, PhD, director of pharmacokinetics at Andrx. “The difference is that a patient has to take immediate-release metformin twice a day whereas extended-release is taken once a day.”
