Most patients who present at the emergency cardiac care unit with a heart attack are experiencing abnormal glucose metabolism, and most of those patients are diabetic — the majority of whom are undiagnosed.
“I think we should be giving an oral glucose tolerance test as a routine procedure in coronary care units,” said Dr. Lars Ryden, professor of cardiology at the Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.
At a press briefing in conjunction with the 24th annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology, Dr. Ryden, formerly president of the ESC, said that about 20 percent of the patients who are experiencing a myocardial infarction are known to be diabetics. But, about 65 percent of the rest of the patients admitted during the acute heart attack have abnormal glucose metabolism — and half of that group would fit the definition for having diabetes.
