Increased serum cytokine levels and bone modelling markers are not directly linked in hyperthyroidism. However, an association does exist between thyroid hormone levels in the disorder, resorption rates, and bone turnover.
Researchers led by Dr. Aysen Akalin at Osmangazi University, Eskisehir, Turkey, evaluated bone modelling markers and their relationship with serum cytokines interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) as well as levels of thyroid hormones and autoantibodies in 26 patients with hyperthyroidism and 20 healthy patients who served as controls. Among the hyperthyroid patients, nine had Graves disease, 14 had toxic multi-nodular disease, and three had toxic adenoma.
