Higher Risk Conferred by Human Leukocyte Antigen DR3-DQ2 and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody Status in Fathers

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 08/21/2002 By Mark Greener

Paternal human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DQ alleles as well as parental thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) status appear to influence the offspring’s susceptibility to autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid.

Researchers from University La Sapienza, in Rome, Italy, enrolled 68 girls and 23 boys with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis as well as 12 girls with Graves’ disease. The mean ages of the thyroiditis and Graves’ disease groups were 10.5 and 8.8 years, respectively. The researchers also enrolled 53 healthy siblings.
