Correcting Male Hyperthyroidism Improves Seminal Abnormalities

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 08/21/2002 By David Loshak

Men with hyperthyroidism show improvements in sperm motility and other seminal abnormalities after normal thyroid function has been restored. G. Krassas and colleagues from the department of endocrinology and metabolism, Panagia General Hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece, examined the effect of hyperthyroidism on sperm quality and composition. The researchers enrolled 23 thyrotoxic male patients aged 43.8 years (± 2.4 years) and 15 healthy, age-matched controls in their prospective controlled study.

Two semen analyses were obtained from patients at two to three week intervals before and about five months after thyroid function was returned to normal either by methimazole alone (14 patients) or iodine-131 plus methimazole (nine patients). Semen was analysed once in the control group. Total fructose, zinc, and magnesium levels in seminal plasma were measured in 16 patients.
