Insulin Resistance, Impaired Glucose Tolerance Linked to CVD Risk

The risk of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis increases with insulin resistance and increases progressively with the degree of impaired glucose tolerance, according to data from the community-based Framingham Offspring Study.

The findings lend support to the hypothesis that cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes have a common etiology, according to Dr. James B. Meigs, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and colleagues.

The researchers reasoned that if type 2 diabetes and CVD have a common antecedent, subclinical atherosclerosis should be detectable not just in individuals with diagnosed diabetes, as has previously been shown, but also in those with subdiabetic glucose intolerance or insulin resistance.
