Higher Folate Levels May Help Protect Against Vascular Disease in Children with Diabetes

High folate levels may protect children with type I diabetes from vascular damage, suggest researchers

Endothelial dysfunction occurs early in the development of vascular disease in diabetes. Studies have shown that high plasma homocysteine levels are associated with endothelial dysfunction and that high intake of the vitamin folic acid may protect against homocysteine-mediated endothelial damage.

Using ultrasound assessment of flow-mediated dilatation and glyceryl trinitrate-dependent brachial artery responses, the researchers compared the endothelial function of 36 children with type 1 diabetes (mean age 13.7 ± 2.2 years) and 20 age- and gender-matched control children. In addition, they measured two markers of endothelial activation – von Willebrand factor and thrombomodulin – in 64 children with type 1 diabetes and 52 control children. They also measured fasting glucose, total plasma homocysteine, serum and red cell folate, vitamin B12, HbA1c, creatinine, and lipids.
