Over one-half of necrobiosis lipoidica patients who are unresponsive to corticosteroids show improvement with topical psoralen plus ultraviolet A.
Necrobiosis lipoidica is a rare skin disease often associated with diabetes mellitus. It results in skin atrophy due to collagen degeneration. Topical corticosteroids are commonly used to treat the disease, but results are variable.
Investigators from the University of Amsterdam and the University Hospital Maastricht in the Netherlands conducted a prospective study of psoralen plus ultraviolet A for treatment of necrobiosis lipoidica in patients who are unresponsive to corticosteroid treatment.
Thirty patients participated in the study, 13 of whom were insulin-dependent diabetics. All patients had previously been unsuccessfully treated with topical or intralesional corticosteroids.
