Antimicrobial Peptide Deficiency May Explain Skin Infections In Atopic Dermatitis

Deficiency in the expression of antimicrobial peptides in the skin may play a role in the susceptibility of patients with atopic dermatitis to skin infection with Staphylococcus aureus.

United States researchers have shown that inflammatory skin lesions from patients with atopic dermatitis have significantly lower concentrations of the antimicrobial peptides cathelicidins (LL-37) and human beta-defensin 2 (HBD-2) than skin lesions from psoriasis patients.

“The low concentrations of HBD-2 and LL-37 in the patients with atopic dermatitis were unable to kill S. aureus,” they explain.
