Impaired sweat response is related to an abnormal sudomotor axon reflex in patients with atopic dermatitis.
Administration of topical corticosteroids appears to reverse the abnormal response and reflex, according to investigators from the Nagasaki School of Medicine and the Institute of Tropical Medicine at Nagasaki University in Nagasaki, Japan.
The investigators studied the sweating response of adult atopic dermatitis patients using a quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test. Lesional and non-lesional skin from patients and skin from non-atopic controls were tested. Sweat volume from the volar aspect of the forearm was measured.
