Treating uncomplicated childhood hemangiomas with pulsed dye laser (PDL) was no better than a “wait-and-see” strategy, according to results of a prospective, randomized trial reported in the Aug. 17 issue of The Lancet.
“Our results do not show any useful benefit of early PDL treatment in uncomplicated hemangiomas,” lead author Kapila Batta, from Birmingham Children’s Hospital, U.K., says in a news release. “Furthermore, treated lesions are at increased risk of skin atrophy and hypopigmentation.”
