Cidofovir, an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate analogue with broad-spectrum activity against DNA viruses, can result in a complete response in patients with human papilloma virus (HPV)-induced lesions, according to a report in the June issue of the Journal of Medical Virology.
HPV causes hyperkeratotic warts, condyloma acuminata, and other skin lesions, the authors explain, and many patients do not respond completely to cryotherapy, podophyllin, laser treatment, or other current treatments. In fact, there is currently no virus-specific drug for HPV infection.
