Diagnoses of primary melanocytic lesions can change as a result of a pathology review in a multidisciplinary pigmented lesion clinic. Clinical management often changes accordingly.
These findings are important for clinical decision-making, patient outcome and research data collection, say researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
When a single pathologist reviewed pathology reports, progress notes and diagnoses concerning 5,136 primary melanocytic lesions from patients, the diagnoses of 559 (10.9 percent) were changed significantly from the submitting diagnosis. Of the 5,136 lesions, 120(2.3 percent) underwent a “critical” revision, with 63 (1.2 percent) changing from malignant to benign and 57 (1.1 percent) changing from benign to malignant.
