There is now evidence that Langerhans cell (LC)-derived interleukin (IL)-16 plays a role in atopic dermatitis, according to German researchers.
LC-derived IL-16, a cytokine that induces chemotactic response in CD4+T cells, monocytes and eosinophils may participate in the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells in atopic dermatitis.
Investigators from Georg-August-University in Gottingen and Eberhard Karls University in Tubingen say recent research had already indicated epidermal cells in lesional atopic dermatitis contain increased messenger (m)RNA levels of IL-16. They investigated the cutaneous expression of IL-16 using in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry in examining cells from 10 healthy patients and 16 patients with atopic dermatitis and also examined IL-16 expression in freshly isolated LCs and keratinocytes.
