NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 16 – Topical application of mitomycin can prevent the scar formation and restenosis that often occurs after aerodigestive tract surgery in children, according to a report published in the April issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Reza Rahbar, from Children's Hospital Boston, and colleagues assessed the outcomes of 15 children with aerodigestive stenoses who underwent surgical repair followed by topical application of mitomycin for 4 minutes. Five patients had choanal atresia, eight had airway stenosis, one had hypopharyngeal stenosis, and one had esophageal stenosis.
