Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Can Identify Vulnerable Plaques in Atherosclerosis

By Martha Kerr NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Sept 26 –

Boston researchers report that through the use of infrared spectroscopy, they can differentiate between stable and unstable plaques in atherosclerosis.

Dr. James E. Muller of InfraReDX. Co. in Cambridge, MA, reported on the progress his company has made in detecting such plaques using their near-infrared spectroscopy system. He presented his findings on Wednesday at Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics 2002, which is underway in Washington, DC.
