By decreasing vasoconstriction, an endothelin A receptor antagonist appears to increase exercise capacity in patients with essential hypertension, researchers report in the August issue of Hypertension.
Dr. Carmel M. McEniery, now at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, UK, and colleagues note that increased endothelin-1 activity in essential hypertension may be the reason why exercise-related vasodilation is restricted in hypertensive patients.
To investigate, the researchers studied 8 men newly diagnosed with essential hypertension and 8 age-matched normotensive men. Subjects received an infusion of the endothelin A receptor blocker, BQ-123..
