The recently developed selective aldosterone blocker eplerenone appears well tolerated and is effective in controlling mild-to-moderate hypertension, researchers report in the August issue of the American Journal of Hypertension.
Dr. Myron H. Weinberger of Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, and colleagues note that spironolactone, another aldosterone receptor antagonist, has shown utility in therapy for hypertension and congestive heart failure, but its use has been limited by progestational and antiandrogenic side effects.
“Eplerenone is a new selective aldosterone blocker that, in contrast to spironolactone, demonstrates a high degree of selectivity for the aldosterone receptor,” the researchers say.
