Cardiac Resynchronisation Improves Heart Failure Symptoms

Cardiac resynchronisation produces a sustained improvement in heart failure symptoms among patients with delayed ventricular conduction. Researchers from Cardiology Magdeburg, other German centres, and the University Hospital, Utrecht, the Netherlands, enrolled 41 patients with heart failure characterised by delayed ventricular conduction.

Guidant Corporation supported the study. Patients received hemodynamically-optimised atrial synchronous pre-excitation of either one or both ventricles over four weeks. After a four-week interval, patients received the opposite pacing therapy. Again, treatment lasted four weeks and was hemodynamically optimised.

In 36 patients, clinicians selected the left ventricle for univentricular pacing. After the second regimen, patients continued with the most effective cardiac resynchronisation therapy for a further nine months.
