Transient ST Events Point to Poor Outcome in Hospitalized Heart Patients

ST events, whether elevations or depressions, are predictive of hospital death in patients with acute coronary syndromes, according to researchers from the University of California at San Francisco.

Dr. Barbara J. Drew and colleagues note that while undertaking a study of the value of continuous 12-lead ST segment monitoring of such patients, “we were impressed by how often we were seeing brief episodes of major ST segment elevation.” The researchers subsequently conducted an analysis of data from two prospective studies of such monitoring in hospitalized patients with acute coronary syndromes, in order to compare the significance of ST elevation and ST depression.

The findings appeared in the June 15th issue of the European Heart Journal. In the 868 patients studied, 177 had a total of 574 ST events. Of these, 242 were of ST elevation and 332 were of ST depression. The elevations were shorter and were more often associated with chest pain than were the depressions. However, there were no differences in clinical outcome between these ST events.
