Hyperglycemia, or even subtle elevations in time-integrated fasting glucose level (HbA1c) within the normal range, can signal a risk of microalbuminuria decades before it develops, according to data from the Framingham Offspring Study.
Furthermore, the investigators found that subjects who developed microalbuminuria were more likely than others to develop both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease during the 24-year observation period, lending support to the hypothesis that these three disorders have a common etiology .
