Sleep Duration an Independent Predictor of Coronary Heart Disease in Women

Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in women, researchers reported here Wednesday at the 16th Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.

 “According to a National Sleep Foundation poll in 2001, one third of the population, or 37%, obtain at least eight hours of sleep at night,” lead author Dr. Najib Ayas, told conference attendees. “Thirty-one percent report getting less than six hours per night.”
