Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children May Lead to Inattention, Hyperactivity

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 14 – There is a significant association between inattention and hyperactivity and some symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), according to a reporting the March issue of Pediatrics.
In a cross-sectional survey, Dr. Ronald D. Chervin, of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and colleagues examined the frequency of SDB symptoms among 866 children (mean age 6.8 years) and evaluated daytime behavior.

The researchers used a validated Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire that assessed habitual snoring, snoring severity, and overall SDB risk. In addition, parents completed an inattention/hyperactivity scale (IHS) and the hyperactivity index (HI).

Sixteen percent of the subjects exhibited habitual snoring, according to the authors. Thirteen percent of all participants had high HI scores (greater than 60), compared with 22% of habitual snorers, and 12% of nonsnorers.]
