Based on a study involving more than 7,500 patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers recommend a three-year screening interval for patients with no retinopathy, but yearly or more frequent screening for patients with higher grades of retinopathy.
Until the Liverpool Diabetic Eye Study, led by Dr. Naveed Younis of Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the frequency of screening to detect early-stage disease has been based on expert opinion rather than evidence-based research.
