Valproate May Increase Ovulatory Failure in Women With Epilepsy

Women with idiopathic generalized epilepsy exposed to valproate are at increased risk of experiencing anovulatory cycles, researchers report in the December issue of the Annals of Neurology As lead investigator Dr. Martha J. Morrell told Reuters Health, “women with epilepsy frequently have menstrual cycles during which they do not ovulate.”

However, the study data indicate that “this is partly due to the epilepsy per se but may also be exacerbated with use of the antiepileptic drug valproate.”
