in Living-Donor Liver Transplantation, Left-Lobe May Be Preferable to Right-Lobe Grafts

When adult liver transplantation involves living donor, left-lobe grafts appear to place less surgical stress on the donor and are less likely to result in hepatic congestion in recipients compared with right-lobe grafts, Japanese physicians report.

Dr. Mitsuo Shimada and associates of Kyushu University in Fukuoka compared clinicopathological data from 39 left-lobe grafts and 6 right-lobe grafts. All of the left-lobe grafts, but none of the right lobe grafts, included the middle hepatic vein. The graft volume/standard liver volume according to preoperative CT ranged from 21% to 66% among the left lobes and from 47% to 75% among the right lobes.
