Immtech International Inc. said on Tuesday that data from a phase IIa study show the company’s lead drug, called DB289, to be a safe and effective oral therapy for African sleeping sickness.
According to Immtech, 30 patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola were enrolled in the phase IIa trial and received DB289 twice daily for five days and once on the sixth day. Ninety-five percent of those treated experienced a complete clearance of the trypanosome parasite, with minimal side effects, the firm said.
