Spanish biotechnology firm Zeltia said on Sunday its experimental cancer drug aplidine had performed well enough against a rare thyroid cancer in a phase I study to warrant further clinical trials.
The trial was conducted by Zeltia’s PharmaMar unit, which develops drugs from marine organisms, and presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology meeting here.
It tested the drug, derived from a Mediterranean tunicate Aplidium albicans, against medullary thyroid carcinoma in 10 adult patients with advanced forms of the disease, for which there is no efficient therapeutic alternative if the tumor cannot be surgically removed, the company said.
