FeRx Inc. said on Monday that it has won a $300,000 grant from the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) orphan drug division to defray some of the clinical and administrative costs of developing its lead product, MTC-DOX (doxorubicin), for the treatment of primary liver cancer. The San Diego-based firm is a privately held maker of targeted drug delivery systems.
MTC-DOX is a formulation of doxorubicin developed using FeRx’s magnetic targeted carrier (MTC) technology. MTCs are microparticles composed of metallic iron and activated carbon designed to allow for site-specific administration, retention and release of a variety of agents, using an external magnet.
