Thiazolidinediones and Fluid Retention: Prevalence and Tolerability in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure

Diabetic patients with chronic heart failure who were taking thiazolidinediones (TZD) developed refractory fluid retention, resulting in a presentation that researchers think may mimic heart failure decompensation.

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, United States, led by Dr. W.H. Wilson Tang, presented these findings at the sixth Annual Scientific Meeting of the Heart Failure Society of America.

The study goal was to examine the incidence of fluid retention in heart failure patients after initiating TZD therapy. Other objectives were to compare the clinical signs of fluid retention in decompensated patients taking TZD and those who were not on the drug, as well as to evaluate the effects of heart failure severity on the tendency to develop fluid retention in TZD patients.
