A Canadian study has shown that brachytherapy can help reduce relapses in patients with rectal cancer for whom radical surgery is contraindicated or unwanted.
The standard treatment for operable lower and middle rectal cancer is radical surgery. However, this approach is sometimes unsuitable for elderly patients, or those who are frail and who cannot cope — or do not wish to have — a colostomy bag.
“With our aging population this kind of situation can be expected more and more often,” said Dr. Laval Grimard, a radiation oncologist at Ottawa Regional Cancer Center, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, speaking here today at the 21st annual meeting of the European Society for Therapeutic and Radiation Oncology (ESTRO).
“We therefore looked into the possibility of local excision plus low dose brachytherapy to help control local disease.”
