Homocysteine-Lowering Therapy Improves Revascularisation, Angioplasty Outcome

Homocysteine-lowering therapy with folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 improves outcome for patients who have had percutaneous coronary interventions.

The therapy reduces the need for repeat revascularisation and decreases overall incidence of major adverse events one year after successful coronary angioplasty.

Swiss and United States researchers say the benefit is primarily related to a decrease in target lesion revascularisation. They say the findings were reproduced in sub-groups of patients in the Swiss Heart Study stratified by traditional cardiovascular risk factors known to influence the need for target lesion revascularisation.
