The most common malignant brain tumor in children, medulloblastoma, may be susceptible to treatment aimed at interrupting the Hedgehog signaling pathway.
In the August 30th issue of the journal Science, Dr. David M. Berman of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and colleagues note that inappropriate Hedgehog pathway activity is associated with initiation of medulloblastoma, “but its role in continued growth of established tumors is unclear.” In studies with murine and isolated human medulloblastoma cells, they discovered that Hedgehog signaling is required for continued tumor growth.
