Greater support from friends and neighbors of presurgical patients with ovarian carcinoma appears to be associated with reduced level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and possibly less disease progression, according to researchers at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
Lead author Dr. Susan K. Lutgendorf told Reuters Health that much research on relationships between psychological factors and cancer has concentrated on the immune system. “The exciting thing about these findings is that they open up the possibility of a new mechanism by which psychological factors may be related to cancer progression–that is, through effects on factors related to angiogenesis.”
