Vitamin E Use May Adversely Affect Infection Outcome in Elderly

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 14 – In elderly individuals, vitamin E use, either alone or as part of a multivitamin, does not have a favorably effect on the incidence and severity of acute respiratory tract infections (RTI), according to a recent report. In fact, use of the micronutrient appears to have an adverse effect on such outcomes.

Micronutrient supplementation has been shown to improve the immune response of elderly individuals. However, few studies have investigated the effect of such supplementation on infectious disease outcomes.
